Light, Heart, and Refreshing Structure
In this story the main character is a candle who is sad because it doesn't have a purpose. The two elements of this story that I appreciate most are its message and the refreshing story structure. The message, that everyone feels sad sometimes but that we all bring light to the world, shines through. But the story breaks free from expected story structure. For one, the other candle characters are a combination of those used for Jewish traditions and for secular reasons. I think this makes it more relatable for children. The second, and most important twist is that the story ends with the main character uplifted but still not knowing what its individual purpose will be. This is a wonderful message to children and is especially valuable to ease an anxious child. The story is also a lovely teaching tool for learning or reviewing many Jewish traditions that include candle lighting.

Fantastic book! I read this book with my children and they really enjoyed it. The message of the book is an important one and the kids understood it easily. The style of writing kept their attention as did the illustrations. Loved that the author combined lessons in Judaism with ecological conservation. The additional definitions, explanations, questions and stories at the end engaged my kids and prompted interesting discussions. Highly recommend!
